5 Reasons why Online Counseling is better than traditional counseling.

Presently there is a great problem in psychological world in that a patient must travel to a psychologist/psychiatrist for an in–person visit / interview. This can only be done by the patient presenting themselves physically in a clinical setting (doctor’s office or hospital). The problems are:

Traditional Counseling

  1. The patient must travel sometimes long distances to present themselves
  2. The patient must present themselves during normal business hours
  3. Because of items 1 & 2 it may be several days before a patient can see a psychologists
  4. A shortage of psychologist in rural / small towns in the USA
  5. A shortage of psychologist after hours and on site in rural areas

Considering Therapy-Why Online Therapy is better

Posted by Mark Nolte on Jun 2, 2015 3:45:00 PM

There are many reasons why Online Therapy or Online Counseling is better than traditional therapy.

First let’s look at why most people do not use traditional therapy:

  1.        Stigma – Not wanting to admit they have a problem.
  2.        Not want to go to an office for therapy in fear they may be recognized by someone they know.
  3.        Not wanting to go to therapy because they do not want to file an insurance claim in fear their employer will find out they are being seen for psychological disorder and may be fire from their job or not receive a promotion.
  4.        The need to travel sometimes long distances to get to your office appointment.
  5.        The Inconvenience Factor-Only time available for an appointment is Monday-Friday 8am – 5pm.

How Online Therapy addresses these issues: Because Online Therapy is done from your computer from the privacy of your home you no longer have to worry about:

  1.        Stigma – it remains private and anonymous
  2.        No office visit but from your home- alleviates the fear of being recognized by someone you know.
  3.        No file of healthcare insurance. Cash bases only and most of the time less than what your insurance co-pay would be for an office visit.
  4.        No getting in your car to travel to an appointment.
  5.        Appointments available when it is convenient for you.

How Mental Healthcare will becoming more consumer-driven (because of online counseling) versus doctor-driven

Over the last 60 years or more Mental Healthcare has been what is convenient for the doctor versus not what is convenient for the patient. All innovation and changes in mental healthcare have come about because it best fit into the doctors “work flow” not what was best for the patient. That is all about to change! We are witnessing before our very eyes the disruptive force of “consumerism of mental healthcare”.

Good management, good relationships get help with online counseling

Posted by Mark Nolte on May 27, 2015 3:31:00 PM

As humans, we all seek companionship.

In order to have a support system in our lives, we usually turn to a single person that we are attracted to; our significant other. This is usually a person of the opposite gender, but can be either for some people. Either way, as long as they please you the same way, like no one else does, they are your significant other and your support system. They make your world go around. However, if there is trouble in paradise and things aren’t working out so well between the two of you, then rather than being a form of support, relationships tend to become draining.

Healthy Diet, Healthy Mind-Eating Disorders

Posted by Mark Nolte on May 22, 2015 10:14:00 AM

Healthy Diet, Healthy Mind

You probably think "Healthy Diet, Healthy Mind" means that if you eat right, you'll have a super brain or something but the phrase being used here means that if you're eating right, then there's nothing wrong with your mentality.

We've all seen how obesity can occur due to eating too much or how you can turn bone-skinny because you’re eating too less. Sometimes this is because of our nature, or because we don't get enough time to eat or because we have too much time to eat and don't feel the need to exercise on a daily basis (laziness, which leads to obesity), but sometimes it’s more serious than that. Eating disorders occur when you consume unordinary amounts of food due to either severe distress or concern about your body weight or shape. Consequences of eating disorders include severe illness and even death. This disease in general is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, behavioral, psychological and social factors that affect the way you think.

How online counseling can help with addiction

The word “addiction” refers to a person’s dependence on a certain activity or substance. Addiction is very different from habit. An addiction cannot be controlled without professional help. It is a compulsive need by the body, to do something or have something and when that is not provided to the body, the body goes into withdrawal and affects the brain horribly. It is one of the most important and complex topics under mental health, and its treatment is highly stressed upon.
